Ashes delivery and transfers

How is the urn for the ashes handled, and what options are available?

Urns for ashes are airtight containers that may have different designs and be made from various materials.
At Stelae, you can choose from different available options such as bamboo, wooden, or salt urns, depending on the intended destination of the ashes: burial, transfer, or custody at home.
If you intend to transport the urn by plane, it must be properly sealed and cannot contain any type of metallic material or decoration.

How long does it take to transfer the ashes after cremation?

After the cremation of a loved one, from the moment you receive the ashes, you may proceed with their transfer. However, for the transfer of ashes outside Spain, where requirements may differ depending on the destination country, you must wait until all necessary procedures are completed.

What is the average cost of the cremation and ash transfer service?

The average cost of a cremation and ash transfer service at Stelae is around 2.495 euros, although this will depend on the option you choose. In addition, airport fees must be taken into account, as they must be paid upon collection of the ashes at the airport of the destination country (this cost is additional to the Stelae service).

Does the cremation service price include an urn for the ashes?

Yes, all Stelae cremation services include the price of the urn for the ashes, although the type of urn varies depending on the option you choose from those available.

Can I choose a specific destination for the transfer of the ashes? Does this affect the price?

Yes, you may choose any national or international destination for the transfer of your loved one’s ashes. This naturally affects the service price, not only due to geographic distance but also because of the policies of each destination and any potential additional fees.

What happens if I want the ashes to be transferred outside the country?

Each country may have different policies regarding the requirements for transferring a loved one’s ashes. Therefore, the procedures may vary. You may need a special wellsealed urn (mandatory for air transport), a transport permit, or even to contact the relevant consulate or embassy. Remember that at Stelae we take care of all these procedures and the air transfer of the ashes.

What documents do I need to request cremation and ash transfer?

To request cremation, you must have the death certificate, complete the application form, and sign the authorization for the funeral company.
Next, if you wish to proceed with the transfer of ashes, the required documentation may vary depending on the destination:

  • Within Spain, you will need the death certificate and the cremation certificate. It is also recommended to include a national literal death certificate.
  • Outside Spain, you will also need (in addition to the above documentation) a declaration from the funeral company regarding the contents of the urn if the transfer is carried out by plane. Likewise, the policies of each country and of the airlines themselves may differ, so the requirements may also vary.
